The major alternative to animal leather is faux leather which is usually made by covering a fabric base, either a natural or a synthetic fibre with a plastic, generally PVC or PU. This is neither environment-friendly nor natural.
Malai is a newly developed sustainable material alternative to animal-based leather. It is a natural fibre composite (NFC) made from coconut water and banana fibre (which are otherwise treated as waste) through a bacterial process. The material resembles leather and paper in its texture and feel. Apart from this, a special bio-fabrication process enables the making of products without seams unlike any other leather alternative currently available. The process is versatile and can be incorporated at any scale. Harnessing the destructive energy
in pine needles for rural energy needs
Central Himalayas have large tracts of pine forests, where excessive forest fires spread by pine needle litter during dry summer months destroy biodiversity. We employ people to collect the pine needles before they burn and use them for generation of clean electricity and cooking charcoal. We use biomass gasification for converting pine needles in to fuel gases, which runs an engine to generate power. The residue, rich in biochar is briquetted to make cooking charcoal. We set up small scale, village based power stations, for generating distributed power.

Commonly used Tetra Pak cartons are a composite of paper, plastic and aluminium. We recycle used Tetra Pak cartons into consumer products. We use Chipboard and Poly-Al sheets made from Tetra Pak carton waste for designing products for both indoor and outdoor applications such as making modular housing, school tables, household furniture, roofing sheets, office internal partitioning etc. Also at the end of its life, it can be recycled again to make other products. We collect over 250 tons of Tetra Pak waste per month and channelize it to recyclers for producing the materials that form the base of our products.

Mixie rescued Indian women from the drudgery of cooking. Trixie seeks to do the same in e-waste ecosystem. Trixie peels off the insulation on electric wires/cables to separate nonmetallic (plastic & rubber) and metal components. Trixie is a simple tool with a metal frame, a cutter blade, wire holder, height adjustment lever and a hand-operated the lever. With dimensions of 200x80x280 mm (lbh), it weighs about 1.6Kgs.
Three women from the waste worker community in Nayandahalli, Bengaluru participated in 'ReimagineWaste' - a hackathon organized by Waste Impact Trust & Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing at The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru in 2016. The women collaborated with other participants to design Trixie, a simple to operate, safe mechanical tool that eases extraction of metal from wires and increases the efficiency of wire recycling.
